I feel the need to throw my two cents in regarding everyone's favourite director Michael Bay. In fact not just an opinion but a defence for the much maligned blockbuster maker.

When did the film watching public and by this I mostly mean film reviewers as MB's latest film (accusations of racism aside) is still generating cash like many summer event films seldom do, but when was it decided that all films need to come with a social conscience/commentary at their core.

What did reviewers say about the original Kaiju films of the 50's and 60's? Were there complaints about lack of story versus giant atomic lizard action, did people care that all the human protagonists had little to do but run around screaming?! I'm pretty sure that they didn't, the Godzilla films at there heart had a message about the damage we are doing to our planet and if you look hard enough at TF2: Revenge of the Fallen, you will find equally strong themes of loyalty, courage and family.

At the end of the day what most of us want from films like TF2 and Godzilla is to be entertained with giant robots/creatures kicking the crap out of each other and blowing stuff up! If theres a strong storyline in there all the better but if it's just tenuous enough to link the hot robot on robot action then that's o.k too. In the case of TF2 I got exactly what I expected,every single dime of the 200 million dollar budget up on screen for all too see. Many things have been said about MB but when it comes to envisaging huge, CGI strewn set pieces nobody does it better.

His film's are not Shakespeare people! If you want that then try something from the Kenneth Branagh back catalogue. If you want to turn your brain off, get stuck into an unfeasibly large bucket of popcorn and watch some cool shit happen for a couple of hours then Bay is your man. Not the greatest director in the world but he delivers exactly what I expect every time, mindless fun in all it's glory.

Paul's curious review of the Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I am going to attempt to review this film without any major plot spoilers so please bare with me! This film charts the life of the titular Benjamin Button (hereafter to be known as BB), a boy who is born bearing all the signs of extreme old age and the doctor who examines him pronounces him not long for this world. BB is taken in by a young black woman who works as a carer at a nursing home and rather than dying proceeds to grow much as any other child would apart from the curious fact that physically he gets younger as mentally he ages. And so begins an epic tale spanning from the end of World War 1 through to the destruction of New Orleans during hurricane Katrina.

This was an incredibly moving piece of cinema without ever getting overly saccharin, writers Eric Roth and Robin Swicord have crafted a wonderful world filled with engaging characters and in BB a protagonist that you are almost instantly rooting for after his harsh introduction into the world. The story although having its action moments is quite a gentle one but it never slows to the point of boredom. It is engaging throughout and the performances by the main cast are excellent, I must make special mention of Taraji P. Henson who plays Queenie as her performance is a particularly strong one.

The Curious Case of BB reminded me of Forest Gump in that you follow an odd central character over the period of his life and it is genuinely about the journey. David Fincher has crafted a masterpiece in BB and from the opening story of Mr.Gateux he manages to bring you from one great cinematic moment to another using his own now familiar colour palette to set the scene in each. I enjoyed this film so much that it is difficult to write a review without gushing or giving away to much of the story so suffice to sat that this would be one of my favourite movies of 2008 and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Here be the list of the flicks that have made the biggest impression on me, entertained me the most, moved me the most, whatever etc in this grand year.

Personally I think 2008 and has been pretty dang good, particularly as here in Blighty we had a few joints drop in the early part of the year that had hit in the States back in ought seven.

I'm ashamed to confess that there are a few chin-strokeworthy, critic-randy pieces I have yet to catch (Diving Bell, Hunger to name a few) so some pretty blatant omissions are comin at ya (or, erm, not)

10. Speed Racer

Wow, a lot of people really hated this (well the ones who actually went to see it), and I really wanted to.Being a staunch despiser of the Matrix flicks I was sharpening my knives but heckity, me liked.

Criticisms from most were; too kiddified (erm, it's a kids film, deal) to colorful and visually over the top (it is a film, I thought that was the point) and wooden performances (it's based on a cartoon!)

Fun, fun, fun.

And John Goodman was in it!

9. À l'intérieur

Sweet. Muscular. Jesus. Must be seen to be believed. Those French are messed up. God bless them.

8. The Mist

High tension, crazed religiosity and a downbeat ending. Nice.

7. Let The Right One In

Has that same indefinable quality that Picnic At Hanging Rock had.

6. There Will Be Blood

DDL acting with his breaks off and pure visual porn.

5. Appaloosa

Do not get the lack of love for this one. A great, straight up, non referential, male bonding-fest. Ed, Viggo, Lance and Jeremy face off and get old school.

4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Left behind a little in the clamor to praise the over-rated Tropic Thunder. A likable, painfully real and hilarious chick flick for guys. ('dick-flick'?)

3. Cloverfield

Somehow lived up to the hype. I just wonder how it took ten years for Hollywood to consolidate the 'found footage' concept that Blair Witch popularized.

2. No Country For Old Men

The Coen's silence the haters with an assured, tense neo-western with not one, but two star making performances
